About Mobility Allowance
The purpose of Mobility Allowance is to provide assistance to people with
a disability who are in employment, vocational training, or looking for
work and, who are unable to use public transport without substantial assistance.
Qualification
A person must:
- be unable to use public transport without substantial assistance because
of a physical, psychiatric or intellectual disability; and
- be aged at least 16; and
- spend at least eight hours a week on a continuing basis in paid employment
(including sheltered employment), or self-employment, and/or vocational
training (which will help in finding paid work) or voluntary work for
a charitable, welfare or community organisaton; or
- undertake job search activities as part of either a program arranged
with a Department of Employment and Youth Affairs or Department of Health
and Family Services funded provider including CETP, or while in receipt
of Newstart Allowance or Youth Training Allowance; and
- not have received a sales-tax exemption on a motor vehicle (not spare
parts) within the last two years; and
- not be provided with a car from the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
Mobility Allowance is not considered taxable income and is not subject to
an income and assets test. The payment is indexed each January according
to CPI changes.
